The Olive Branch, a symbol of Life, Peace and Reconciliation cherished by Weary Dunlop and the emblem of the 20th Anniversary of his foundation.

Commemoration

Sadly, on 12th July 1993, Sir Edward Dunlop passed away. More than ten thousand people lined the streets of Melbourne for his state funeral.

The following are just a few of the many quotes attributed to Weary:

'Life is no brief candle, but a splendid torch to be made burn ever more brightly'

'I have a conviction that it's only when you are put at full stretch that you can realise your full potential'

'Your best is better, when your better is best'

The most special gift Sir Edward Dunlop possessed was his gift of forgiveness. He used to say:

'We must forgive but never forget'

12th July Commemoration Service

Each year the board of the Foundation arranges a Commemorative service in honour of Sir Edward Dunlop. The service is conducted at the site of his statue on St Kilda Road in Melbourne.

The service is attended by dignitaries, members of the Dunlop family, members of the Armed Forces, State and Federal politicians, members of the ex-service community (including a large contingent of ex-prisoners of war) and the general public. It is pleasing to report that each year the service is becoming more popular with participation from Ivanhoe Grammar School, Scotch College, Williamstown High School and Sacred Heart Girls College.

The service is supported and enhanced by the participation of the:

  • RSL
  • Australian Defence Forces
  • Staff of Department of Veterans' Affairs
  • St John's Ambulance
  • Salvation Army
  • Corps of Commissionaires
  • City of Melbourne
  • 2/10 Medium Regiment Band

The service is held each year at 11 a.m. on July12 and all members of the public are welcome to attend.
